Sporting Group
Sporting group is a classification used by various kennel councils, such as The Kennel Club of London and the Australian National Kennel Council, to categorize those dogs that are used for hunting birds or those brought along in the outdoors. From way back, nobles and other member of the elite society bring their dogs to accompany and assist them. Among the oldest definitions of the word sport in the English language is hunting. Thus, sporting group means a group of dogs that assist people in hunting.
Sporting dogs are naturally active and alert animals. Being so, they are very likeable companions. These creatures are very versatile. They have energy levels for running across fields. In addition, they are very adept in water. It is important for these dogs to be skilled and proficient in both land and water because they are supposed to run over and fetch birds hunted down by their human companions. In fact, some of these dogs are required to exercise regularly to develop and enhance their hunting abilities in both water and in the field. Among the known members of the sporting group include spaniels, retrievers and pointers.
American Water Spaniels are little brown gundogs that can fit snugly into a canoe without taking much space. AWS are known for their enthusiasm in hunting birds, fish and even furred creatures. They are also known for their intelligence and its willingness to please its master. In addition, AWS are very protective of their owner.
Golden retrievers are gundogs used to retrieve shot birds. When trained properly, these dogs have soft mouths and are careful in retrieving birds. Known for its intelligence and friendly demeanour, retrievers are also used in illegal drug detection and guide dogs for the blind.
Pointers are athletic and graceful gundogs that are very alert and always ready on the go. As their name suggests, pointers assist hunters by pointing out the location of the birds. However, they are not expected to find and fetch shot birds but they can be trained to do so.
